At Sight To See Eyecare & Eyewear, we understand that every eye is unique, and standard contact lenses aren’t always the best solution for everyone. That’s why we’re passionate about fitting specialty contact lenses to meet your specific vision and comfort needs. Whether you have a unique prescription, an irregular cornea, or conditions like keratoconus or dry eye, our specialty lenses offer clarity and comfort beyond what traditional lenses can provide. These lenses are individually customized and designed for patients whose eyes require solutions beyond standard soft lenses.
Specialty lenses are ideal for individuals who:
have been diagnosed with severe dry eye syndrome
have corneal scarring due to injury or disease
have been diagnosed with keratoconus, a progressive condition that causes the cornea to gradually thin and bulge into a cone shape
have post-surgical corneas (e.g. after LASIK, PRK, or corneal transplant)
are intolerant to other types of lenses or have difficulty achieving clear vision with standard soft lenses
Your eye doctor or contact lens provider will be able to tell you if you need specialty contact lenses and if so, which lenses would be best based on your individual requirements.
Rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses are hard, durable lenses made of breathable materials that allow oxygen to reach the cornea. RGPs are more rigid than soft lenses, which leads to better optics through the lens and makes them ideal for patients with astigmatism, keratoconus, or those who require sharper vision than soft lenses can provide. RGP lenses offer not only excellent clarity, but durability and ease of handling as well.
Hybrid lenses are a combination of both soft and hard contact lenses, giving patients the best of both worlds. These lenses combine a RGP center with a soft lens skirt in the periphery of the lenses, allowing for the clarity of an RGP, but with the comfort of a soft contact lens. These lenses are great for patients with irregular corneas and mild keratoconus.
Scleral lenses, also referred to as sclerals, are large-diameter lenses that vault over the cornea and rest on the sclera (the white part of the eye), hence the name. They are ideal for patients with mild to severe keratoconus, irregular corneas, and scarred or post surgical corneas. Scleral lenses also contain a liquid reservoir between the lens and the cornea. This liquid reservoir provides ongoing hydration throughout the day, making them ideal for patients with very dry eyes.
