Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a widespread vision condition affecting about 1/3 of the U.S. population and over 90% of individuals in some East Asian countries. While common, myopia can lead to serious complications that threaten vision later on in life such as retinal detachments, glaucoma, and cataracts, making it crucial to manage its progression, especially during childhood and young adulthood when eye changes occur rapidly.

What is Myopia

Myopia causes difficulty in seeing distant objects clearly such as leaves on a tree or road signs, often requiring individuals to squint to focus. It often develops in childhood and tends to progress as children grow. Recent studies suggest that the more advanced your myopia gets, the more serious the effects can be on your vision. Therefore, slowing its progression can significantly reduce long-term risks to vision.

Types of Myopia Control

At Sight To See Eyecare & Eyewear, we take a personalized approach to myopia control. Our experienced optometrists use advanced methods tailored to each patient’s unique needs, all of which have been shown to be effective in a number of peer reviewed studies.

• Orthokeratology (Ortho-K): Special overnight rigid contact lenses that gently reshape the cornea while you are asleep, correcting vision and slowing myopia progression without the need for glasses or contacts during the waking hours. This is often preferred for athletes or other active individuals.

• Specialized Soft Contact Lenses: Disposable soft contact lenses designed specifically for myopia management.

• Specialized Myopia Control Glasses*: While not yet available in the US, these lenses are specially made for myopia control. They have shown great success in controlling myopia progression in Canada and Europe. Rest assure, once they are approved to prescribe, Sight To See Eyecare & Eyewear will be on the forefront of offering these to our patients.

• Atropine Eye Drops: While the mechanism of action is currently unclear, low-dose atropine drops have been shown to reduce the rate of myopia progression effectively. Atropine at higher concentrations has been FDA approved for the treatment of amblyopia for decades.
